Here at Entrepreneurs of India we really love to feature the start up stories of young Indian entrepreneurs who prove that with some vision and a lot of action, you really can set your own course in life. Today we interview Aditya Jain (@adityajain501), founder of Made by Me
Aditya didn’t want to follow the expected route into the family business of garment export. So instead he is plotting his own course with a new venture, while still using the skills and expertise of the family business. His brand Made By Me is a fashion brand making well fitted made to measure shirts for men. Currently, they sell via Instagram, you can view the collection on their Instagram account. They have a wide range of collection from solids, prints to checks and stripes. It’s only been six months since MadeByMe has started and they plan to start selling MadeByMe Accessories soon!
1) How did you get your idea for this business?
Since early college days I always thought of doing something different. I didn’t just want to have a set family business of garment exports for me. I like facing challenges and wanted to explore my options for my career. I was going through my wardrobe and one day and I realised that all my shirts have different measurements and different fittings. I wondered that not all shirts fit me well and I should do something about it. This is how the idea of “MadeByMe” struck me.
2) Why is “now” a good time for this idea to exist?
Online Selling has been booming in India since quite sometime now. Every single product is available online, making shopping very easy. Even Social Media has played a major role for boosting sales in each and every sector. Hence, “Now” is the best time for the idea to exist.
3) What was the reaction from your family when you first decided to become an entrepreneur?
My family extended full support towards the idea and they played a key role in setting up the business. I really look up to my dad and sister as mentors who have backed the venture throughout. Without their suggestions and guidance, I don’t know where MadeByMe would stand right now.
4) What was your biggest failure in business and what did you learn from it?
Six months into the business and the journey has been really difficult to be honest. Getting the right quality of fabric and the shirts delivered on time, are just a few challenges we face often. However the biggest failure for us is when our customer is left unsatisfied by the final product. Customer satisfaction has always been our top priority and that is one of our key principles. There is always something new we learn from every order. All positive feedbacks are appreciated and every negative feedback is taken into consideration helping us not to repeat the mistakes again.
5) What is your biggest obstacle in the next 12 months and how will you overcome it?
The biggest obstacle we’ll be facing is the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), as it will lead to an overall increase in prices in all the sectors. We aren’t very sure how are we going to tackle this obstacle but we are checking out on possible options. Another obstacle for us will be to create a hold in the market amongst our competitors and we plan on doing heavy marketing for MadeByMe in the coming months.
6) What habits contribute to your success?
Patience, high self-esteem and constant innovation contribute to our success!
7) If you had the opportunity to start this business again what would you do differently?
If I had the opportunity to start the business again I would prefer starting it as a one stop brand where everything in mens fashion would be available at competitive prices.
8) What is your favourite inspirational quote?
”Work hard in silence let success make the noise” Frank Ocean
9) Where do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration from the city of Mumbai – the city that never sleeps, the city that never gives up. Even among the heavy traffic and the millions of people around one always manages to find a serene atmosphere where one can find all the solutions to his problems.
10) What is your favourite book?
The Test of My Life – Yuvraj Singh’s Autobiography. This book really inspires me as it portray’s success and failures are a part of life, one should never give up even though you’re going through the toughest of days of your life.
11) What advice would you give to someone starting out?
Age is just a number, if you have an idea convert it into a business as soon as possible. Don’t waste a single minute and never give up without trying!
