Welcome to another week of #startupstories. This week we are delighted to feature our first pet inspired startup – Tailslife. Tailslife is a pet care app that makes pet parenting easier. The app is aimed at new pet owners who are searching for information about the best way to take care of their new pet. Raising a pet is not easy, especially if you are new to the city as well. So, Tailslife positions itself as the answer to all your pet problems. It guides you to the new age of pet parenting.
We think this is a fantastic idea and are really excited to feature Tailslife. So lets meet the founder Balaji Ramesh and hear his story. Welcome to EOIndia Balaji.
1) How did you get your idea for this business?
I have been a pet lover and parent since childhood. I got the spark for TailsLife when my sister presented me and my wife an English Cocker Spaniel, named Pepper by my mom. As it stood, I was always struggling to find the best services, products and suggestions for him.
I found the pet care space to be ultra cluttered and we had to break the clutter with validated and verified information. This is how I decided to launch an app to serve all pet parents.
2) Why is “now” a good time for this idea to exist?
The pet care industry witnessing tremendous growth over the past decade, yet the solutions that a pet parent is looking for are fragmented. There was a vacuum that needed to be filled with a comprehensive resource that would serve as a tailored solution for the unique requirements of every pet parent. I also feel the current entrepreneurship ecosystem is the most conducive for a tech solution like TailsLife.
3) What was the reaction from your family when you first decided to become an entrepreneur?
My family as well as friends were highly supportive of the idea since inception. This helped me take the plunge sooner.
4) What was your biggest failure in business and what did you learn from it?
Everyday is a new experience for me and the journey has been quite smooth so far.
5) What is your biggest obstacle in the next 12 months and how will you overcome it?
TailsLife is poised to be India’s largest pet parents’ / lovers’ community over the coming months. The idea is to provide pet parents with the most comprehensive platform that would fulfill all their pet care needs. We are focused on reaching out to pet parents in an organic manner, which may not always be as easy as it seems.
6) What habits contribute to your success?
I believe in starting the day early and adopting a positive approach towards my daily chores. Set your mind to win.
7) If you had the opportunity to start this business again, what would you do differently?
Not too different from my current approach, but definitely expedite the processes by six months.
8) What is your favourite inspirational quote?
It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog, by Mark Twain.
9) Where do you find inspiration?
I draw inspiration from my immediate surroundings – while taking a walk, while driving, by observing people, by playing with my dog and my toddler son. I am fascinated by just anything around me, especially anything artistic in our daily lives.
10) What is your favourite book?
I recently completed reading a book, called Shoe Dog: A Memoir by the Creator of Nike, by Phil Knight. It was amazing to find out how the iconic brand Nike was born.
11) What advice would you give to someone starting out?
Don’t start just because someone who’s close to you has done it. Get involved in something because you are passionate and can add value to your business concept. Don’t wait for the stars to align. Now is the right time to start.
As always, our thanks to Balaji for answering our questions. We wish Tailslife lots of success in the future as they create a better future for our pets and their owners.
